After School Running Programs

The Ball State University Sport Administration Association operates after-school running and fitness programs in Muncie-area elementary schools. During the fall semester students organize the after-school program at Burris Elementary School in prepration for students participating in the Mile Mania Race. In the spring semester students organize an after-school program at Cowan Elementary School, which has won the  Chase Charlie School Challenge each year since 2009

These projects were supported by ING Run for Something Better and Youth Service America.

Another after-school running program that the Ball State Sport Administration Association operates is the Step Up for Health running program funded by United Healthcare at Cowan Elementary School. Sport Administration, Physical Education Teacher Education, and Exercise Science students volunteered to not only run the exercise program for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders in Cowan, but also to emphasize healthy habits for the lifetime. As part of the program, Sport Administration students solicit sponsors for the Penny per Step fundraiser where businesses sponsor the after school runners per step in order to benefit the Muncie Boys and Girls Club. In 2013, over $1,200 was raised for the Boy’s and Girl’s Club in Muncie. The students from Cowan Elemtary recorded over 1 million step for the program.
