Summer Camp

An interdisciplinary team of twelve students enrolled in an immersive learning class at Ball State University designed and implemented a health and wellness camp for third-eighth graders in rural Blackford County in 2010. The camp was expanded to include Blackford and Jay counties in 2011.

The purpose of the camp was to enhance the campers’ understanding of wellness, provide them with a framework for living a healthy active lifestyle, offer opportunities for physical activity during the summer, and create opportunities for making new friends. The dimensions of wellness were introduced to the students through physical activity.

Dr. David Pierce, Dr. Paul Nagelkirk, and Mrs. Tonya Skalon were the faculty mentors. The project was supported by the Blackford County Community Foundation and the Portland Foundation.
